A building with centuries of history
Costa Coffee’s store, located in the historic Old Ship building and owned and operated by Scoffs Group, Costa Coffee's largest franchising partner, has recently undergone an exciting refresh. On August 1st 2024, the first phase of a significant makeover was completed. Remarkably, the store remained open throughout the renovations, ensuring that the people of Sidmouth could continue to enjoy their favourite handcrafted coffees.
The Old Ship, a name the building has proudly held for 670 years, has a rich history dating back to its origins as a coaching house. Over the centuries, it has served as a bustling hub for travellers, a smugglers' hideout, and even a storage space for contraband wine and brandy, which was secretly transported through tunnels still connecting the building to the nearby church.
From decline to revival
Although the Old Ship fell into disrepair during the Victorian era, when it served as a doss house, it was eventually restored as a beloved pub. This tradition continued until 2011, when the building was transformed into "Costa Coffee at the Old Ship" by Scoffs Group. Despite the change, the name "Old Ship" endures, honouring its storied past. A blue plaque now adorns the building, commemorating its fascinating history.
Recent renovations, spearheaded by Scoffs Group, have focused on enhancing the building's unique character. All windows, windowsills, and frames have been refurbished or replaced, while the lower woodwork, including the front entrance pillars, has been meticulously restored to match the building’s historic aesthetic. The drainage system has been upgraded, the back of the building has received a thorough uplift, and the roof has undergone significant repairs.
Looking ahead: phase two
This work marks the first phase of a two-part refurbishment, with the exterior now complete. The much-anticipated interior refit will honour the building's age and heritage, blending its historic charm with Costa’s modern décor.
Visitors are warmly invited to come and enjoy a drink while admiring the Old Ship’s refreshed appearance.
